HARRISBURG, Pa. (WKBN) – The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) released School Performance Profile (SPP) scores Thursday.

Scores can be viewed at the Pa. School Performance website using the interactive search tool.

Of the four Mercer County Schools — Farrell, Sharon City, Hermitage, and Sharpsville — Farrell had the lowest score (43.8 percent), while Sharpsville had the highest (90.5 percent).

Sharpsville Superintendent Dr. Bill Ferko said last year was a different story.

“Our scores were not where they needed to be,” he said. “We did not demonstrate the growth that I thought we should.”

So here’s what changed.

“What I see happening in our classrooms is use of technology, excellent classroom management and excellent use of time,” Ferko said. “Besides two areas, we demonstrated growth in every tested area in the district.”

Dr. Ferko said they plan to be even better next year.

“Our hope for next year is to continue the pattern of growth,” he said. “To make sure that every student grows at least one year in all of our classes.”

Last year, a majority of schools in Pennsylvania did not have scores calculated to lessen the impact of changes in student performance measures with the new Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA).

Through the PSSA, each student in third through eighth grade is tested in language arts and math. Fourth through eighth grade students are also tested in science.

“The process of transitioning to the new, more rigorous Pa. Core Standards is ongoing and schools, administrators and teachers have been working diligently to design curriculum, update lesson plans and align learning tools to the new standard,” said PDE Secretary Pedro Rivera.

He said as students improve on the assessments in the future, the SPP scores will also improve.
