Mooney cruises in tournament opener

STRUTHERS, OH (WKBN)-The Cardinal Mooney girls soccer team made a statement in their tournament opener Monday topping Columbiana 14-0 at Simon Soccer Park in Struthers.

The Cardinals fired a total of 36 shots on net with Columbiana’s Molly Witmer making 22 saves.

The scoring was opened up by Carolyn Kay who used her left foot to finally beat Witmer after peppering the keeper with shots early. Kay had two goals on the evening.

After that it was the Lizzie Philibin show as she tallied the Cardinals next two goals, and slotted five home in total on the evening.

Other scorers for Mooney were Breanna Evans (4), Caitlin Perry (2), and Carol Buchenic.

The Cardinals now head to the sectional final where they will play Lake Center Christian on Thursday night at Simon Soccer Park.
