Secretary of State: Ohio voters shouldn’t worry about fraud

Jon Husted says Ohio state laws make it difficult for election fraud to happen

A proposal in Ohio would let residents register to vote online, but not until after this fall's presidential election.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – President Obama and local political leaders firing back amid Donald Trump’s remarks that the election system is rigged.

“The election is being rigged by corrupt media, pushing false allegations and false lies in an effort to elect Hillary Clinton as president,” the Republican presidential candidate said.

With only three weeks left until Election Day, President Obama responded to Trump’s criticism Monday.

“There is no serious person out there who would suggest that you could even rig America’s elections,” Obama said.

Ohio Secretary of State and Chief Elections Officer Jon Husted says many are frustrated with the political process.

“Frankly, I don’t think it’s a very responsible thing to do, whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican, to undermine the institution of our democracy by calling the legitimacy of it into question.”

He says Ohio state laws make it difficult for election fraud to happen, citing voter ID laws and using people from both parties to count ballots.

“When the votes all come in and they’re counted at night, there are Dems and Reps present. It’s a public meeting, the public’s welcome to watch that, as well as the media, so it’s a very transparent process.”

Husted is also urging voters to really look at the ballot, not just at the presidential candidates, but at local races as well.

“Presidential elections may get all our attention, local elections are probably going to have more of an effect on our lives.”
