SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) – Questions remain about why a Utah father would leave his five-year-old daughter alone on a college campus.
Surveillance cameras captured the child fending for herself, with just a blanket, outside in the cold all night.
She was left alone outside Ogden-Weber Applied Technology College early Sunday night with temperatures in the 30s with nowhere to go and no one to turn to.
“She was scared. She was going, ‘Daddy!’ and no one was there,” the child’s mother said. “She just kind of had her blanket and kind of waited until daylight.”
Security Manager Fred Frazier said the girl stayed in the same spot all night where her father told her to stay.
“He told her to shut up, and lie down and go to sleep,” the girl’s mother said.
An Ogden-Weber Applied Security Guard found the girl around 7:30 a.m. Monday. She was hurt from a fall and crying.
“It was heartbreaking for him to see a little girl running along by herself. That’s when he got concerned and she was shivering and cold,” Frazier said.
Ogden police don’t know why the girl’s father left her all night. She had been staying with him for the weekend at his parent’s house.
“We don’t know really what purpose he would take the child or if there is some drug-induced psychosis,” said Lt. Tim Scott. “Right now, we are waiting to interview the father.”
Meanwhile, the girl’s mother wants answers as to why her child was left alone in the cold. She says the girl is traumatized by the ordeal.
The Department of Child and Family Services is involved in the investigation, and the father could be charged with felony child abandonment.
