Indians fans beware: World Series perfect time for ticket scams

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says there are several things you can do to protect yourself

The Cleveland Indians Opening Day game against Boston was postponed due to inclement weather Monday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) – Cleveland Indians fans should beware of ticket scams for the World Series, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine says.

Earlier in October, one Ohio consumer reported losing $280 trying to buy Cleveland Indians tickets on Craigslist.

“We just want Cleveland fans to be able to enjoy every moment of this, without getting ripped off,” DeWine said.

He says there are several things you can do to protect yourself from scams:

  • Buy from reputable sellers instead of third-party individuals not associated with the event
  • Check the venue’s ticket policies and inspect paper tickets to ensure they are real
  • Be skeptical of offers that are too good to be true
  • Consider paying with a credit card, if possible, because it is easier to dispute credit card charges
  • Be skeptical of sellers who say you must pay via wire transfer, prepaid money card or gift card

Suspected scams can be reported on the Ohio Attorney General’s website.

The World Series begins Tuesday in Cleveland with the Cavaliers’ season opening on the same day.
