Pennsylvania raised the tax on cigarettes, encouraging many smokers to buy them in Ohio.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) – Two New Castle men are charged with burglary after police said they broke into a convenience store and stole cigarettes.

Just after 4 a.m. on Monday, officers said they heard a loud bang followed by an alarm coming from the Sunoco gas station on Wilmington Road.

According to a police report, 39-year-old Patrick Hicks and 48-year-old Shawn Currie threw a large rock through the front door, and took several packs of cigarettes.

Officers caught Hicks as he was trying to escape through the back of the store.

They said Currie ran into a wooded area and police had to chase after him.

It took officers from Neshannock, Wilmington and New Castle police departments, along with the Pennsylvania State Police to find Currie, who was hiding in a shed behind the Sunoco.

Both men were arraigned and placed in Lawrence County Jail.
