Community help save operations at St. Vincent de Paul Society

St. Vincent DePaul Society in Youngstown announces temporary closure.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Those in charge of a local soup kitchen are thanking the community for help when they needed it the most.

Things were running as usual Tuesday at the St. Vincent de Paul Society after it reopened a week ago. Last month, the dining area was closed when leaking pipes in an upstairs bathroom caused the ceiling to cave in.

Crews had to set up a temporary feeding area in a tent across the street, but directors said the community pitched in to help ensure meals were provided to those who needed it.

“Gleaners was donating chips, drinks, cakes. We had subway in New Middletown donate 240 six-inch turkey subs. You know, that’s incredible. We had all the parishes step up to help out financially,” said Dining Hall Manager Wayne Murray.

Murrary said repairs were finished just in time to offer hot meals as the colder weather set in.

The soup kitchen serves roughly 250 meals each day.
