WANAQUE, N.J. (CBS) – A man jumped from Interstate 297 in Wanaque, New Jersey, with his two children Monday night, state police said, CBS New York reported.
The man died, but the children survived.
New Jersey State Police troopers from the Totowa Station were called by Pequannock police at 8:08 p.m. for a possible suicide attempt.
It was reported that a man had jumped with his two children, state police said.
Troopers and local police were sent out to find them. They found the man’s car on southbound I-287 at milepost 56.4 in Wanaque Township, state police said.
Detectives believe the father jumped with the children from the overpass into a wooded area near the Wanaque River, state police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the children were taken to St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, state police said.
The investigation continued late Monday night.
