Mahoning Co. Hazmat receives money for oil spill equipment

Marathon Petroleum gifted the team with $4,200

HazMat training helped with the chlorine spill in Youngstown, Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Mahoning County Hazmat team is getting a boost Thursday, thanks to a gift from Marathon Petroleum.

The company presented them with $4,200 at the Mahoning County Commissioner’s meeting. People with Marathon Petroleum said giving the money makes sense.

“The finances allow us to buy some stuff we ordinarily don’t have the money for. It can be used not only for the Marathon oil spills, but any other spills within the county itself,” said Mahoning County Hazmat Deputy Chief Silverio Caggiano.

The equipment can be used if the company has an accident at any of its plants in the county.

The hazmat gear can catch oil and other pollution, and keep it from spreading downstream.
