BOARDMAN, Ohio – Donald Paul “Sunny” Sunderlin, 82, of Boardman passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side early on the morning of Sunday, October 30, after a 15 month-long battle with lung cancer.

Born in Youngstown, Ohio on July 14, 1934, he was the eldest son of Leslie T. and Kathryn (Rose) Sunderlin.

Donald, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School (’52) proudly served his country for 7 1/2 years in the Armed Forces of the United States of America under the United States Navy. He sailed on the U.S.S. Putnam 757 as an Electrician’s Mate 3rd Class, where he was also at the top of his class in marksmanship and served in the Military Police on board his ship. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked as a salesman for J.B. Winkle Electric Co. of Canfield, Ohio.

Donald adored his wife, daughters and grandchildren. They were his whole life.

He married the love of his life Shirley (Galip) Sunderlin, on September 17, 1960. He will be deeply missed by her; his two daughters, Dina Sunderlin of Canfield and Beverly (Dominic) Leonelli of Boardman and his two grandchildren, Joseph Gerard Vingle and Rachel Marie Leonelli. He leaves his sister, Barbara (Sunderlin) Aradas of Massachusetts, his brother, Paul (Georgiana) Sunderlin of Boardman and brothers and sister-in-laws, Atty. Ronald Galip, Vincent and Loretta (Galip) Morgione, George Galip, Jr. and Dr. Richard and Beverly (Galip) Marinelli. He also leaves his godchildren, Atty. Gregory Morgione, Melissa Sunderlin, Vincent Iskandar, Angel Saade and Andrew Saade. Donald also leaves many nieces and nephews whom he loved.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Donald was a member of St. Maron Church, The Saint Tobias Society and an honorary recipient of the Silver Massabki Medal. He was a founder and active supporter of the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon, North Jackson, Ohio. His love and admiration for the Antonine Sisters, also of North Jackson, provided him with many hours of joy as he volunteered tirelessly at their convent and adult day care.

The family will be honoring him with a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, with Chorbishop Michael Kail as celebrant and Chorbishop Anthony Spinosa con-celebrating.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 9:30 – 10:50 am at St. Maron Church, 1555 S. Meridian Rd., Youngstown, Ohio.
