SEBRING, Ohio (WKBN) – A man who police say hit a 4-year-old girl so hard that her lip split, told officers the girl moved when he was striking her, which made her injuries worse.
The incident happened Oct. 30. Police were informed after the mother of the child showed up at her father’s house in Sebring and told him that her boyfriend, 29-year-old Dale Rosier, hit her daughter, causing a substantial bruise on the child’s face and a cut lip, according to a police report.
The report states that the mother didn’t immediately contact police because she feared she would be in trouble.
The officer advised the father to tell his daughter to report the incident to police, but she didn’t that night.
The woman’s father got a follow-up call from police the next day and asked why the incident was not reported, and the father said he went to work and did not realize his daughter failed to report the incident.
Officers then went to Rosier’s residence where they found him, the child he allegedly assaulted and another child in the house. The mother had gone to work, Rosier told police.
Police say Rosier admitted hitting the girl and told them she was being punished. He said when he “went to smack her across the mouth,” she moved, which he said made the impact worse, according to the police report.
Officers found the child who they thought had been hit, and said she had bruising on her face and a cut on her lip.
Rosier was arrested at the scene and charged with assault and child endangering.
Police said at this time, no charges have been filed against the mother. The case has been turned over to Mahoning County Children Services.
