Florida truck driver sentenced for causing fatal accident on I-80

Israel Chamizo was sentenced to 12 month of non-reporting probation and to pay $750 in fines

A commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle collided on Interstate 80 and blocked state route 46 ramp in Austintown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Florida truck driver charged with causing a fatal accident last year was sentenced to 12 month of non-reporting probation and to pay $750 in fines.

Israel Chamizo was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter. As part of a plea deal, the aggravated vehicular homicide charge against him was dismissed, according to court records.

Chamizo was driving on Interstate 80 when he collided with a vehicle in front of the State Route 46 ramp. The driver of the other vehicle, Donald Stephenson of Boardman, died as a result of his injuries.

A witness at the scene told Ohio State Highway Patrol that Chamizo had made an improper lane change, causing the accident.

Chamizo’s license has also been suspended for a year as a result of the conviction
