YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown Fire Department spent Saturday morning fighting a fire at an old Youngstown City Schools elementary building.

The fire occurred at the old Harrison Elementary School, located on the corner of Commonwealth Ave. and Republic Ave.

The Youngstown Fire Department was called to the scene just after 8 a.m. after receiving calls that flames could be seen coming from the building.

The department said the fire started in the gymnasium, causing the roof to collapse. So, all of the firefighters had to get out of the building.

“The city demolition is coming out and they’re going to bring their excavator out and pull down the walls so we can expose the fire and put the rest of it out,” said Fire Chief Charlie Smith.

He also said the building should be demolished by the end of the day, and since it was a vacant building, no one was injured.
