Tribute: Roslyn (Marino) Gatta

Roslyn (Marino) Gatta passed away November 5

Roslyn (Marino) Gatta, Howland, Ohio - obit

HOWLAND, Ohio – Although Roslyn (Marino) Gatta never officially became a lawyer, as a loving wife, 24/7 homemaker plus mother figure to a long list of nieces, nephews, her friends and her children’s friends, she was a chief negotiator, trusted consigliore, judge and jury.

The Howland resident passed away last Saturday, November 5, following multiple illnesses and a lengthy hospital stay.

She worked as a secretary at Benada Aluminum, graduated from Niles McKinley High School and went to Trumbull Business College before devoting herself as a full time homemaker. In the ‘70s she managed the day-to-day operations of Niles bar Jimmie’s Inn.

Besides being a constant support for her family, she gave them an appreciation of classic films and rock ‘n’ roll. Many a late night was spent watching cinema from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s while her musical tastes ran from Neil Diamond to Neil Young. She attended the 2003 Righteous Brothers concert in Youngstown, was up close for Pearl Jam’s 2006 concert in Cleveland and regularly reminisced about an early rock ‘n’ roll bill at Stambaugh Auditorium that featured Fats Domino among others.

She raised her children to be involved with charities and at one time collected donations door-to-door. Long before it became mainstreamed, Roslyn was environmentally responsible, recycled goods as much as possible and gave away clothing and other items to a variety of local organizations.

She was pleased that she was able to use her absentee ballot and vote for the first female presidential candidate.

With her family she traveled frequently and visited more than 40 states. With them and relatives she visited a number of casinos, playing (and usually winning at) the penny slot machines. Her favorite hobbies were taking photos of clouds, acquiring pins with angels on them and collecting anything that depicted snowmen. Her specially-prepared punch during the annual holiday gathering after Christmas was the stuff of legend. Roslyn loved to cook, providing meals nearly every day of the year with an emphasis on holiday specialties. Her charm and charisma regularly caused relatives and friends to visit her at her table during parties, reunions and weddings. Even during her recent stays in the hospitals, she took the time to get to know the caregiving staff who would then make extra visits even when their shift was completed.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years Anthony; daughter, Nancilyn; son, John and daughter-in-law, Maureen Lauer-Gatta.

Due to a lengthy association and their importance throughout her life during good times and bad, Roslyn viewed Elaine Sloan of Warren as her “adopted sister” and Joseph Accordino of Niles as her “adopted son.”

Her parents, Matilda “Tillie” and John Marino and brothers, Richard and Clarence and sisters, Martha Jane “Dolly” and Betty Ann preceded her in death.
