Morse’s big day paces YSU past Akron in basketball opener

The junior guard scored 27 points, notched five steals and added four assists

The Youngstown State men's basketball team started its season with a big victory, downing Akron, 90-82, on Saturday at the Beeghly Center as part of the second annual Coaches vs. Cancer event.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The Youngstown State men’s basketball team started its season with a big victory, downing Akron, 90-82, on Saturday at the Beeghly Center as part of the second annual¬†Coaches vs. Cancer event.

Cam Morse paced the Penguins with 27 points on 10 of 17 shooting. The junior guard also added five steals and four assists.

Meanwhile, Matt Donlan scored 20 points (6 of 11 on 3-pointers) and Francisco Santiago scored 15 points and notched seven assists.

After falling behind by five at halftime, YSU outscored Akron 54-41 in the second half.

In all, the Penguins shot 51 percent — including 11 of 27 from behind-the-arc — while the Zips shot 44 percent. Isaiah Johnson led Akron with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Next, YSU travels to Toledo on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. matchup with the Rockets.
