CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – During a time when law enforcement around the country are under scrutiny, it might be forgotten that they are also human and facing personal problems of their own.

Mahoning County Sheriff’s Deputy Lenny Burke was diagnosed with stage four cancer in his lungs and abdomen recently.

On Sunday, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141 hosted a spaghetti dinner benefit for Burke.

Members of law enforcement from all over the Valley showed up to support him. It was all to help fund his treatment and cost for transportation.

“All of the years that you put in working at a place and you give your whole life to,” Burke said, “and to see them want to come support you when something’s wrong — it’s a great family to be a part of.”

Said President of Police Lodge 141 Joe Iberis: “One thing about us is when there’s a hard time, everybody sticks together and we always come together for each other.”

Burke is currently participating in new cancer treatments called immuno-therapy that takes place at Ohio State University Medical Center.
