Key Returnees
Senior John Ryan returns after being named to the First-Team All-AAC last year. Ryan saw his scoring numbers climb from 7.3 as a sophomore (in 2014-15) to 13.3 as a junior. “We need John to be a consistent scorer and playmaker for us (this year),” says coach Birch. Ryan led the Spartans in assists (2.6) and in steals (1.7). Ryan is joined by his classmates Austin Barone, Coleman Stauffer (4.0 ppg), Travis Koontz, Sebastian Heinonen, and Mark Smaldino. Junior Holden Lipke scored 10.8 points per game last winter and led the team in rebounding (5.2). “Holden has gotten better in both of his first two seasons,” Birch states. “He’s worked hard this off-season and I think he’ll take a major step during his junior year.” Fellow junior Mike Melewski (4.6 ppg) is back as Boardman’s point guard. Birch says to keep an eye on sophomore Che Trevena, who should provide scoring depth and another playmaker into the mix.

Outlook
After back-to-back 9-win seasons, Boardman appears to be on the rise as they return three of their top four scorers. Even without the Spartans’ leading scorer (Gannon Murray) in each of the past two seasons, Birch remains confident. “I’m very excited and optimistic about this coming season. We have the necessary depth and experience to make a big stride as a program this year. We are all looking forward to the journey.”
