YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – With Thanksgiving around the corner, AAA is expecting more than 49 million Americans to travel for the holidays.

That is nearly one out of every six people traveling this holiday season. It is also expected that 99 percent of travelers this holiday season are going to drive instead of fly.

In Ohio alone, experts are expecting this Thanksgiving to be the busiest weekend on the roads in the last 11 years. More than 2 million Ohioans are hitting the roads this upcoming weekend, traveling, on average, about 50 miles from home.

All these numbers are driven by the price of gas. The National Average for a gallon of gas is $2.15, while Ohio averages $2.10 per gallon.

Compared to last year, it’s not much of a change, but what is significant is that gas prices have remained low, and people are taking advantage.

Ohio State Highway Patrol Sgt. Jason Bonar said drivers should be courteous on the roads to stay safe around all of the traffic.

“You’ll be getting into construction zones, traffic congestion, numerous things that are going to agitate some people. Just take a deep breath and relax. You’re going going to get where you’re going and we want you to get there safely,” he said.
