PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Philadelphia police say they’re trying to determine if a bad batch of heroin or another drug is responsible for nearly 50 overdoses in the city in one day.

WCAU-TV reports the overdoses were occurred Thursday, mostly in an area nicknamed The Badlands because of its rampant crime and drug trafficking. It includes Kensington and parts of north Philadelphia.

So far, nobody has died from any of the overdoses, though several people had to be treated with naloxone, which reverses the effects of heroin.

Police are hoping lab tests will help them identify the drug and whether it’s laced with fentanyl, a powerful synthetic drug often linked to overdoses.
