GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – After 75 years in Girard, Santisi’s IGA Marketplace will be closing, the company confirmed on Friday.

A news release from the Santisi family said the level of sales at the store was not enough to cover the store’s operating costs.

The grocery store will close later this fall and all employees will be losing their jobs along with store manager Anthony Santisi, the grandson of the store’s founder. Until then, operations will continue as usual.

Girard Mayor Jim Melfi said he is sad to see the grocery close, but that he is not surprised. Sales are what drive a business to stay open, and that’s why the Girard IGA is closing.

“Everybody today sells groceries, I think. The face of the grocery business has changed. Everywhere you turn, there’s detergent and food being sold in drug stores,” Melfi said.

There are rumors that Rulli Brothers will take over, but Michael Rulli says that as of now, that’s not the plan. He wishes the best of luck to whoever moves in.

Girard IGA’s shelves are still stocked, and customers will be able to shop there until the end of November.

The Santisi family thanked employees, associates and customers for their support and said an inventory liquidation sale will be scheduled before its closure.
