YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Soon, the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office will be adding drones to its equipment list.

County commissioners agreed Tuesday morning to spend $3,000 from the sheriff’s budget to train and certify five deputies so they can operate the new drone the department will be purchasing.

Sheriff Jerry Greene says the equipment could have a number of uses for both law enforcement and local fire departments.

“They’re good to use for search and rescue…with the federal and our state agencies, for risk assessment, barricaded individuals. We use to get a better look without individuals in harm’s way.”

Greene says he’ll use federal discretionary funds to buy the drone once his deputies have been certified to operate it by the Federal Aviation Administration.

He says he will then make it available to other police and fire departments around the county.
