SHARON, Pa. (WKBN) – As part of Small Business Saturday, Gallery 29 in Sharon handed out many receipts throughout Saturday.

Compare this to a typical weekend of business…

“It doesn’t compare,” Tony Kropp of Gallery 29 said.

Some of the people in Gallery 29 checked out the store’s work for the first time on Saturday. Kropp said it was a great opportunity to get customers to return even after Small Business Saturday ends.

“When you make a good impression and they see the artwork — we get a lot of [people] from out of town, especially repeat customers in here,” she said.

It was also a great day to open your business.

Barn Owl’s owners said they had a lot of late nights to make sure their grand opening was ready for Small Business Saturday.

“We weren’t about to have a sign in our window that said ‘Coming Soon’ when everyone else is open and thriving,” Derek Bish said. “We just had to be a part of it.”

Small Business Saturday is a nationwide movement, as it happens in communities all across the country. For people going to downtown Sharon, they know how important it is to support local owners.

“Businesses in Sharon really needs us,” said Jennifer May, a shopper. “We’re proud of what they’re trying to bring in downtown Sharon.”

“This is so much more charming,” said shopper Vikki Gruitza. “You’re treated like a neighbor, like a friend.”

American Express, which launched Small Business Saturday in 2010, says 95 million people went shopping nationwide for last year’s event.
