Youngstown Air Reserve Station could get new planes if bill passes

Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown have been pushing for replacing the aircraft at the 910th Airlift Wing

Lawmakers discuss funding to support the future of the Air Reserve Station in Vienna.

VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) – The airplanes at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna could soon be upgraded.

Next year’s National Defense Authorization Act directs the Air Force to report on how it will prioritize upgrades to new C-130J aircraft. The new aircraft have aerial spray, airborne firefighting and weather reconnaissance capabilities.

Senators Rob Portman and Sherrod Brown have been pushing for replacing the aircraft at the 910th Airlift Wing, which currently uses the C-130H aircraft.

“Prioritizing upgrades for new C-130 aircraft will help maintain and strengthen our special mission units like the 910th at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, which has become a model for other Air Reserve Stations throughout the country,” Portman said.

Brown said the bill would not only help the Mahoning Valley, but all communities that benefit from the Youngstown Air Reserve Station’s special mission.

“The men and women of Youngstown Air Reserve Station perform an important and unique mission, and it’s critical that the 910th has the most modern C-130 fleet possible to do their job.”

The House could vote on the bill Friday with the Senate taking a vote next week.
