MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene is warning the community of a phone scam in the area.

Greene says the caller is identifying himself as an officer of the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and is calling people, saying they need to pay an outstanding citation or warrant. The caller uses the names of deputy sheriffs and makes reference to local county judges, according to a news release from the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office.

The caller also leaves messages on answering machines with an 877 number to return the call.

Sheriff Greene said the call is a scam and is warning people not to give any personal information over the phone, or provide any financial or credit card information to the caller. Greene says the Sheriff’s Office would never solicit payment for any type of fines over the phone.

Greene recommends that people not answer the phone if they don’t recognize the number. He said the callers use phones that can’t be tracked back to them.
