Boardman stuns Harding in opener

The Spartans trailed by 13 with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter, but still managed to come all the way back for the victory.

Boardman rallied past Warren Harding 52-51 in dramatic fashion in the season opener for both teams.

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Boardman rallied past Warren Harding 52-51 in dramatic fashion in the season opener for both teams.

The Spartans trailed by 13 with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter, but still managed to come all the way back for the victory.

Down by five late in the fourth quarter, Austin Barone putback drew the Spartans to within three.  A short time later, Holden Lipke drained a three to tie the game at 51 with 7.8 second remaining.  Lipke tallied 14 points in the game.

Following a timeout, the Raiders inbounds pass was intercepted by John Ryan, who was subsequently fouled.  Ryan split of pair of free throws to give Boardman a 52-51 lead.  Ryan finished with 10 on the night

Harding had won final chance in the final seconds, but turned the ball over, sealing the win for Boardman.

Mike Melewski reached double figures for Boardman with 11 points.

Derek Culver led Harding with 15 points.

Warren Harding (0-1) returns to action Tuesday night at home against Poland.

Boardman (1-0) returns to action Tuesday night at Niles.
