YSU falls to 5-5 overall on the season

EAST LANSING, Michigan (WKBN) –¬†Senior Matt Donlan scored a game-high 21 points, and junior Francisco Santiago posted his third double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Still, the Youngstown State University men’s basketball team dropped a 77-57 decision to Michigan State Tuesday night at the Breslin Center.

The Penguins fall to 5-5 overall, while the Spartans improve to 6-4.

Donlan, who matched a season-scoring high, connected on 7-of-15 from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc for his third 20-point game this season and the second in the last three games. Donlan has also made 14 3-pointers in the last three games.

Santiago recorded his first points-rebounds double-double of the season and all 10 of his boards came on the defensive glass.

The Penguins trailed by as many as 15 early in the first half but used a 10-0 run to get within five, 19-14, with 9:12 left before halftime. Donlan hit is first 3-pointer of the game to get within four, 23-19, at the 5:07 mark.

Three-pointers by Donlan and Santiago and three free throws by Donlan kept the Penguins within five, 35-30, with just over a minute left but the Spartans took a 37-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Donlan then scored the Penguins first six points of the second half to make the score 41-36 with 18:36 left.

Michigan State, which shot 58.6 percent from the field in the second half, went on a 16-8 run over the next seven minutes to expand its lead to 13, 57-44. The Spartans led by as many as 22 late in the second half.

YSU shot just 32.8 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point range for the game.

The Penguins visit American, Saturday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m.
