Ready to run? Registration now open for Youngstown’s first marathon

The race's director is hoping the city will bring in around $2 million from the marathon

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – The first ever Youngstown Marathon will be held this upcoming summer in downtown Youngstown.

The 26.2 mile race is set for Sunday, June 4. A full marathon, half marathon and 5K are expected.

Chemical Bank, formerly known as Talmer Bank and Trust, has formally signed with the Youngstown Marathon to become the presenting sponsor of the city’s first marathon.

Courtney Poullas, the race’s director, has already begun preparations. She is a certified running coach with the Road Runners Club of America.

“The Youngstown Marathon was an idea developed by local runners and local business owners. When we realized the amount of economic impact marathons can have on their respective cities, we really wanted to breathe that kind of life into Youngstown,” she said.

Poullas expects between 1,000 and 1,500 people to run, making it a pretty big event for Youngstown.

“We expect among the dining and tourism industries and the runners and the families and friends that they bring in, we see about $2 million coming into the city this first year,” she said.

Poullas hopes the race can grow from there, already planning a second one. She said sponsors have already signed two- and three-year deals.

“I think this has been talked about for a while but I think we stalled and just didn’t put it in place until now because we felt the city had to be ready for it. The way the downtown has become revitalized with so many local businesses and so much traffic, we thought, ‘This is the year,'” Poullas said.

The plan is to have the route start and finish at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium. The route will run through the north side of the city, through Mill Creek Park, then back to the stadium.

Prize money will be given out to winners, the exact amounts are still being decided.

Those interested in running can only register online.

The Youngstown Marathon’s headquarters are located downtown at The Soap Gallery.
