Poland Schools tab YSU professor to lead improvement plan

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – For the last two years, the Poland School Board has been working to get a strategic plan for the district.

On Monday, they finally decided on who will come in and organize it.

Starting in January, YSU Professor Doctor Ronald Chordas will help facilitate a plan for improvement in several different areas.

“Certainly finance, facilities, program, curriculum — many different, important kind of core areas of operation throughout the school district,” said Poland Superintendent Dave Janofa.

The school district is budgeting $10,000 for Chordas’ work.

That price didn’t sit easy with everyone on the board. Janofa said it likely won’t cost that much at the end, though.

It’s the first time the district has done anything like this. Janofa said it’ll help introduce new programs to the schools.

“We talked about foreign language going into the middle school,” Janofa said. “There’s a lot of things where you can’t just plug that program down at a building and say, ‘Hey let’s move forward with it.'”

He said it’ll also get the community more involved.

In the beginning of February, they’re having a public meeting to talk about the status of the plan and get people’s input.

“We’ll start establishing groups in the different areas or different topics that we will have just discussed and kind of move through the process that way,” Janofa said.

The first meeting will be in January as an executive session for a select group of stakeholders.

Janofa said from there, they’ll have weekly meetings to discuss the status.
