YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown State will be heading to the FCS National Championship Game in early January, which has Penguins flocking to the YSU bookstore for new gear.
Fans were caught up in the excitement of this playoff push Monday and now, the drive for five.
“We’ve always had YSU pride so win or lose, we’re with them. But now that they’re on this winning streak, we just wanna wear the gear, show our colors and we want everyone to get behind us,” Marcy Sturgeon said. “They’re just doing so well. We want to support them, we want them to continue to do all of the wonderful things they’re doing and to win the next game.”
Youngstown is squarely behind the Penguins and after Saturday’s win, the team picked up even more fans across the country.
“Second year for Bo Pelini and he’s taking them to the Championship. I get goose pimples talking about it,” Bob Sargent said.
Fans had no holiday shopping anxiety while looking through YSU gear. After all, some fans have experience with this and remember how to treat the playoff fever when they first caught it 25 years ago.
The bookstore would normally be empty with finals over and the students at home, but now red is the color of the season and YSU gear is the perfect gift.
“Some late Christmas shopping. I have plenty of YSU stuff so I’m not really shopping for myself, but my cousin, she’s younger, still in high school. Think she might be a Youngstown State fan, so shopping for her,” Lauren Harrold said.
Mark Schuler, a member of the team who had family watch him play in Washington, was among the shoppers. Now he’s making sure the rest of his family is ready for the title game.
“My brother, I’m seeing if I can order some of the national championship t-shirts that they’re selling,” he said.
Those shirts, which say “2017 NCAA Division 1 Football Championship,” were big sellers today. The 300 pre-orders are expected to arrive at the bookstore on Tuesday.
The Penguins will play in the championship game on Saturday, January 7.
We will be airing a live pregame show, “YSU Drive for Five,” on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m. on WKBN Channel 27 and WKBN.com.
