William R. McFarland, Brookfield, Ohio - obit

BROOKFIELD, Ohio – William R. “Bill” McFarland, 70, passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning, December 24, 2016 at Genesis Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio.

William was born on September 24, 1946 in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of Ralph McFarland, Jr. and Eileen (Scahill McFarland) McElhaney.

He was a 1964 graduate of Brookfield High School and was employed at Sharon Steel and Greenville Metals until he happily retired in 2008.

William was an avid houndsman, competing in and judging hunting trails at the highest levels of the sport. Whether it was chasing raccoons with Treeing Walkers from his teens through the 1980’s or running rabbits with Beagles from the 1990’s until his final day, Bill loved the outdoors and the thrill of the chase. He was the 2006 UKC Hunting Beagle World Champion and a two-time National Champion. Bill was co-owner of Shenango Kennels with Jim Cataldi.

William will be deeply missed by his mother, Eileen McElhaney of Hubbard, Ohio; his companion of 16 years, Catherine Maldonado of Brookfield, Ohio; his children, Jamie (Robert) Miller of Transfer, Pennsylvania and Ryan (Michelle) McFarland of Mercer, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Ellen Petrusko of Hubbard, Ohio and Sandy (Ron) Cheney of Brookfield, Ohio; three brothers, Robert (Debra) McFarland of Scottsdale, Arizona, Tom (Debbie) McFarland of Hubbard, Ohio, and Ralph (Thresa) McFarland of Brookfield, Ohio; nine stepbrothers and sisters; many nieces and nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph McFarland, Jr. and his grandparents.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016 and from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016 with a prayer services starting promptly at 11:00 a.m. at Lane Family Funeral Homes – Madasz Chapel located at 6923 Warren- Sharon Road Brookfield, Ohio 44403.

Burial will take place at Brookfield Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to The American Heart Association or his local UKC Beagle Club in care of the funeral home.
