CORTLAND, Ohio – John Fleischer, age 94, got a call to active duty by the Lord on Sunday, December 25, 2016.
He was born on April 2, 1922, in Warren, the son of Simon and Rose Meister Fleischer.
John attended East Junior High School and proudly served his country in the Army’s 83 Infantry, 331st Division during World War II, landing at Omaha Beach and served in the European Theater. John was awarded the Bronze Star with V Device, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Marksman Badge, European Campaign Medal, World War II Battle Stars and Arrowhead for amphibious landing before being Honorably Discharged on August 2, 1945.
He married the love of his life, his darling as he called her, Vivien Crane, on June 7, 1947.
John was employed by GM Lordstown as a booth cleaner in the Maintenance Department retiring in 1987 after 21 years of service.
His love of classic cars, especially ’59 Cadillacs, was shown by his attendance at the local car shows and swap meets. He also loved attending the annual D-Day Reenactment in Conneaut where he enjoyed sharing his World War II stories, he especially enjoyed the 83rd Infantry Group.
He leaves behind two daughters, Sandy Shorts of Bazetta and Pat (Herb) Loree of Howland; son, Kevin (Elaine) Fleischer of Champion; three grandchildren, Lori (Rick) Palowitz, Ryan and Brandon Fleischer; three great-grandchildren, Hannah and Paige Haynie and Grace Zucco. He also leaves his lady friend, Phyllis Rutherford.
John was preceded in death by his parents; seven siblings; his wife, Vivien and a son-in-law, Jeff Shorts.
The family would like to thank his private caregivers, Kim, Lisa, Amy, Julie, Heather, Mary and Nancy, who were so extremely kind and compassionate to him during his last months; as well as the Shepard of the Valley Home Health Care nurses, Danielle, Lisa and Patty, who went above and beyond to make sure he was as comfortable as possible.
Friends may call between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St. in Cortland; where the funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2016.
Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
