YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – James Edward DeHart, Sr., of Youngstown, Ohio was born in Floyd County, Virginia on February 14, 1920.
He saw the sun set peacefully on December 29, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. with his family and pastor.
He was a gift to many with his kind heart, generous soul and willingness to always go above and beyond for his family and friends.
He was a mentor, teacher and example for all that needed to see the “true essence of a man”.
He always put God first and his family.
James Edward DeHart, Sr. married Susie Patterson on July 29, 1944. They were married for 72 years.
From this union came 4 children, James, Jr., Juanier, Thursenia and Armetia.
James E. DeHart, Sr. worked at Republic Steel/LTV for 40 years and maintained a part-time job at Acme Motors for over 30 years.
After retirement, he loved to travel to Las Vegas, Nevada and San Diego, California. He had a special place for Virginia and West Virginia. He also spent a great deal of time in Cleveland, Ohio.
No matter how spectacular some of these places were, he always made time to see family members.
He enjoyed riding his bike and taking long walks, this was his daily routine. He also enjoyed spending time with his heirs and telling stories about life.
He was a proud and devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle.
He came to Youngstown, Ohio in 1944 and he and his wife joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Christian experience. He received God as a young man and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church until his illness and death. He enjoyed hearing his wife and daughter sing God’s praises as though they were whispering angels. He lived his life following God’s teachings and brought his children to God at an early age. He always said that, “The best book ever to show you a good life is the BIBLE”.
James E. DeHart, Sr. was preceded in death by his mother, Missouri Ann Ingram DeHart; father, Virgil Oscar DeHart; four brothers, Harry, Winston, Sr., Emmitt and Henry; six sisters, Hilna, Mary Jane, Virginia, Ollie, Geneva and Eva and a great-grandson, Cameron DeHart.
Honoring a loving life devoted to his memory are his wife, Susie DeHart; four children, James Edward DeHart, Jr. (Carmen) of Youngstown, Ohio, Juanier Cianciola of Youngstown, Ohio, Dr. Thursenia Jones (David) of West Bloomfield, Michigan and Dr. Armetia Johnson (Curtis) of Las Vegas, Nevada. Also, nine grandchildren, Tanisha DeHart, James Edward DeHart, III, Danitra DeHart, Shavanna Cianciola, Derrick Cianciola, Jr., Veron Porter, Vernon Porter, Tyler Johnson and Taylor Johnson. He had 11 great-grandchildren, James Edward DeHart, IV, Jhavonn DeHart, Jasmine DeHart, Caiden DeHart, Jerni DeHart, Charles Jones, Savonn Jones, Mya McCaskill, Aujenay Cianciola and Nimala I. Alamin, Jr. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Calling hours are from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. preceding the service. Funeral arrangements are in the care of L.E. Black, Phillips, and Holden Funeral Home.
