HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – Margaret Furin Powell of St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage, formerly of Bedford Road, Brookfield, passed away after a brief illness at 4:03 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017. She was 95.
Born on June 30, 1921, in Vanderbilt, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Stephen and Helen Stickner Furin, who later settled in Sharpsville.
Margaret was married to Joseph “Hap” Powell at Sacred Heart Church, Sharon, on November 24, 1942.
She was a longtime member of the Brookfield Township Fireman’s Ladies Auxiliary. She also worked for many years at the front desk of the former Valley View Department Store in Brookfield.
Mrs. Powell loved to cook, sew, do crafts and was an accomplished sketch artist.
During the 1940s and ’50s, Margaret played the accordion in several bands in the Shenango Valley and had a love for music in general. She enjoyed listening and dancing to music with a lively beat.
She also had a soft spot in her heart for animals and all of the family’s various pets over the years, especially her faithful first Collie, Lassie.
Margaret is survived by a son, Robert J. Powell and his wife, Shirley of Valrico, Florida and a daughter, Peggy Nadine Katona and her husband, Leslie of Hermitage. She also leaves five grandchildren, Constance and Cindy Lou Powell, Christie Lee Sanchez and her husband Carlos, Adam Fister and his wife Carissa and Jay Fister and his wife Tracy; three great-grandchildren, Robbie Pastrana, Alec and Hannah Maye Fister and a beloved niece, Rosemarie Prisby.
Besides her parents; husband, Hap and an infant grandson, Robbie Powell, Margaret was preceded in death by four brothers, Andy Stephen, Michael “Lefty” and Johnny and three sisters, Anne Hromyak, Catherine James and Mary Prisby.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, or to any animal shelter/organization of the donor’s choice.
There are no calling hours or services planned.
Burial will take place at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Hermitage.
