Charles Edward Dawson, Sr., Youngstown, Ohio - obit

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A funeral service celebrating the life and legacy of Mr. Charles Edward Dawson, Sr. will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church. Mr. Dawson departed this life January 5, 2017, at his residence in Youngstown.

Mr. Dawson was born August 3, 1937, in Indianola County, Mississippi, a son of Lowrene Cruder Hopkins and Louis Dawson.

Charles began singing as a young kid in the choirs at Greater Friendship Baptist Church, alongside his father. As a young adult, he sang with the Silver Trumpet Choir and male chorus, serving as lead singer, president and director. Until his recent illness, he was still a dedicated member of the male chorus. He was a dedicated trustee, who didn’t mind painting, cutting the grass or doing whatever needed to be done to serve his church.

Charles was a former employee of East Ohio Gas Co., retiring after more than 30 years of loyal service.

He was blessed by God with his marriage to his beloved Roberta, whom he married on April 15, 1972. To this union, they were blessed with three loving daughters and from a previous marriage, he was blessed with three loving sons.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his lovely wife of 45 years, Roberta; their daughters, Shequita (Maurice) Sims of San Antonio, Texas, Sharlotte Dawson-Mwangi of Boardman and Shavonne (Rodney) Seabrook of Akron; his sons, Charles Edward Dawson, Jr., Kenneth and Lezley Dawson, all of Akron; his sister, Earlean Roberts (Donald) Anderson of Youngstown; his brothers, Leotis (Gerri) Hopkins and Darryl Dawson, all of Youngstown; his stepsister, Patricia Dawson of Youngstown; six grandchildren, Devon Marquise and Shakari Jonese Cunningham, Monae Khyara Sims, Syrai India Lee-Seabrook, Mekhi Charles Dawson-Mwangi and Rodney Khan Seabrook; a host of loving nieces, nephews, in-laws and other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepsisters, Marva Snipes and Jean Dawson and his brother, William Simmons and Raymond Dawson.

Friends may call Friday, January 13 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church and Saturday, January 14 from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service.
