WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. Senate confirmed Friday retired Gen. James Mattis to run the Pentagon in President Donald Trump’s new administration.

The Senate Armed Services Committee voted decisively Wednesday to approve Donald Trump’s pick for defense secretary and were awaiting Senate confirmation.

Mattis, 66, spent four decades in uniform, retiring in 2013 with a reputation as an effective combat leader and an astute strategist.
