HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – Edwin Dean Phillips, formerly a 32 year resident of Hermitage, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2017, in Evansville, Indiana, where he resided for the past year. He was 94.
Mr. Phillips was born January 8, 1923, in Sharon, a son of Daniel and Gertrude (Frohm) Phillips.
A graduate of Sharon High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington, Pennsylvania and earned two master degrees, one from the University of Pittsburgh and the other from the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois.
Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was a business teacher for 30 years, having taught at Jamestown (Pennsylvania) High School and Woodrow Wilson High School, Levittown, Pennsylvania.
Edwin and his wife were frequent walkers in Buhl Park and enjoyed golfing at Buhl Park Golf Course (Dum Dum). They also traveled extensively and have been to all of the United States.
His wife of 66 years, the former Marion I. Carnie, whom he married June 24, 1950, passed away May 4, 2016.
Surviving is a daughter, Sandra Fox and her husband Gary, Mount Vernon, Indiana; a son, Jim Phillips and his wife Joyce, Round Hill, Virginia; five grandchildren, Kristen Fox Miller and her husband, Tim; Jessica Fox Brown and her husband, Brendan; Lt. James Phillips, Jr. (USCG); Adam Fox and Katie Phillips; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Marion Grgurich, Hermitage and nine nephews and one niece and their families.
Besides his wife, Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Carl and Robert Phillips.
The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Rd., Hermitage, Pennsylvania 16148.
