Warren business owners, leaders eager for new security cams downtown

Once installed, the 40 new cameras will be monitored by both the sheriff's office and the Warren Police Department

Warren will be getting 40 new surveillance cameras downtown.

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – Officials in Trumbull County are excited about nearly 40 new surveillance cameras they’ll be able to install after receiving money from the state.

“This just…gives you more of a sense of security and what not,” Commissioner Dan Polivka said.

Around Courthouse Square in downtown Warren, there’s already quite a few surveillance cameras keeping a watchful eye but soon there will be a whole lot more.

“It’s gonna cover quite an area,” Polivka said.

In collaboration with the city, Trumbull County was awarded nearly $200,000 from the Local Government Safety Capital Grant Program — money that’ll be put toward purchasing the cameras and related equipment to record video of public areas and high-crime locations in this target area.

Once installed, the cameras will be monitored by both the sheriff’s office and the Warren Police Department.

“I’m sure that somebody’s thinking about doing something down here. They’ll think twice now that more cameras are down here,” Polivka said.

Tony Schofer, who owns the Speakeasy Lounge downtown, thinks adding more cameras will only benefit the area.

“Whether they’re coming to my establishment or any of the other fine establishments in Warren, to have that knowledge that you are not only safe today, but actions can be reviewed in the future through the camera system, gives people peace of mind.”

Weathersfield and Champion townships also received grant money. Weathersfield is buying a new police van and Champion will be getting life support equipment.
