HOUSTON, Texas (Formerly Youngstown, Ohio) – A “Homegoing” celebration in honor of Doris will be held Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at J.E. Washington Funeral Home in Youngstown with Pastor Roney Tucker of We Walk by Faith Bible Church delivering the eulogy.
Doris (Harris) Watkins, 88, formerly of Youngstown, left this life and entered into eternal rest with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in Houston.
Mrs. Watkins was born July 14, 1928 in Lyman, Mississippi. The oldest of nine children, she was the daughter of the late Reverend Joshua Harris and Doris Harris, of whom she was respectfully named after.
Having a Father who ministered to her during his entire life made a major impact on Doris. She loved going to church regularly. Up to the day she departed, Doris took her Christian walk very seriously. She read her Bible daily and prayed consistently for family and friends without ceasing.
For many years Doris worked as a domestic while being a devoted wife of 41 years to the late Joshua “Cigar” Watkins and a dedicated mother to her three children, Jeffrey L. Harris (Houston, Texas), the late, Stephen Watkins (Youngstown, Ohio) and Doretha Watkins (Houston, Texas). One of her top priorities and greatest joys in life was to care for her daughter, Doretha.
After being a resident of Youngstown Ohio for the majority of her life, at age 82, Doris decided to say goodbye to cold weather and moved to Houston to live close to her oldest son, Jeffrey.
When she wasn’t on the phone getting the latest news about family, she was in front of the TV praising and worshipping God with Jimmy Swaggart Ministries on the SBN network.
Her laughter, voice and sweet spirit will resonate in the hearts by all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy filled with loving God and her family.
She will be missed by her children both from Houston; Doretha Watkins and Jeffrey L. Harris; her grandchildren all from Youngstown, Nalemn Hasley, Korey Jennings, Natasha Watkins and Amanda Watkins; her brothers and their spouses all from Youngstown, Joshua and the late Sharon Harris (Youngstown), David and Francis Harris, Jeremiah and Ruth Harris and James and the late, Maxine Harris; ten great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Stephen Watkins; her sister, Clara Reed and three brothers, Daniel, Moses and Johnathan.
Friends may call Friday, April 21 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the J.E. Washington Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the celebration.
