Giannios sells half-off candy on Easter Sunday for 30th year

All of Giannios' chocolates and candies were sold at 50 percent off

The Giannios Candy Company in Struthers is celebrating the holiday by holding a discounted Easter sale.

STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) – Giannios Candy in Struthers closed its doors at 4 p.m. Sunday after a very busy day.

The shop opened at 8 a.m. and had thousands of people file through for an Easter candy special — all chocolates and candies were sold at 50 percent off.

Customers were lined up before the store opened its doors.

“I left my house a little after 7 a.m.,” Susan Mickler said.

Giannios’ yearly tradition has jolted thousands out of bed to satisfy their sweet tooth for the past 30 Easter mornings.

And it actually started by accident.

“Somebody called us early Easter Sunday and didn’t have their candy,” said owner John Giannios. “So we ran down and opened the store up for them and people started piling in.”

All these years later, people are still piling in — which means a lot of prep work…in pounds of chocolate.

“Oh this week? Probably 40,000,” Giannios said.

While getting those treats are pretty sweet, it’s the bargain that can’t be beat.

“We spent $38 and got like $80 worth of candy,” Elaine Patrick said.

“I probably save over $100 by doing it this way,” Mickler said.
