YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Private services were held for Mr. James Oscar Singletary, 78, of Youngstown, who departed this life Tuesday, April 25, 2017.
Mr. Singletary, affectionately known as “Big O” was born June 8, 1938 in Struthers, Ohio, a son of Rev. J. B. and Lucille Griffin Singletary.
He was a 1957 graduate of The Rayen School.
James had been employed in the car plant as a painter for 30 years at General Motors Lordstown, retiring in 1996.
He was a former member of St. James A.M.E. Church, where he served as trustee, was on the Usher Board and with the maintenance ministry. He was a former member of the Masonic Order.
He was a member of Local Union 1112, the NAACP, Urban League, was a union official and a foreman for ten years.
He was an avid Cleveland Browns fan and enjoyed playing social games.
He was a U. S. Army veteran.
He leaves to cherish his memory three daughters, Sharon Singletary and Ruth (James) Anderson both of Youngstown and Margaret Singletary of Columbus; the mother of his children, the former Esther Mauzy, of Youngstown; five sisters, Sue Hill and Ida Bell Singletary both of Youngstown, Myrtis Owens and Lula Jean Singletary both of Toledo and Ethel Jones of Liberty; four grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James D. Singletary.
