Big inning powers Mathews softball to Regional Final

KENT, Ohio (WKBN) – The Mathews softball team defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-3 Friday in a Division IV Regional Semifinal at Kent State University.

The Mustangs trailed most of the game, but the offense came to life in the 5th inning. Mathews scored all 6 of their runs, thanks to 4 errors by the Knights in the 5th.

Pitcher Nicole Watts had another strong outing for the Mustangs, allowing just 3 earned runs with 3 strikeouts. Mackenzie Graham led the way from the plate with 3 hits, while Noelle Migliozzi had 2 hits. Paige Sponsler finished with a double and 2 RBI.

Isabella Sherban led the Knights’ offense with 4 hits, 2 home runs and all 3 RBI. Aquinas finishes the season with a 16-12 overall record.

Mathews (21-8) advances to play Lucas (21-6) in the Regional Championship Saturday at noon, back at Kent State.
