BOARDMAN, Ohio – Marietta Grant, 87, of Boardman, departed this life on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 3:15 p.m. at her residence, following an extended illness.
She was born on May 15, 1930 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of James and Ida Lacey Ivy. She resided in the area since 1950, coming from Washington, DC.
She was employed with the McDonald Board of Education for 30 years as a custodian, before retiring.
She was a member of Summit Assemblies of God and was a former member of Friendship Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and belonged to the usher board.
She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and reading. Her personal library held over several thousand books, including a vast collection of African American history and literature.
She married George Irvin Grant in 1950 whom later died on June 18, 1997.
She leaves to mourn one son, George Anthony “Tony” Grant of McDonald; one daughter, Ms. Michele Denise Grant of Youngstown; two brothers, Hershel (Joyce) Ivy of Laurinburg, North Carolina and Stanhouse (Noi) Ivy of Austin, Texas; five sisters, Ms. Martha Ivy of Warren, Ms. Anna Provitt of Niles, Mrs. Carol Brightwell of Warren, Ms. Eleanor Ivy of Masury and Ms. Emily Burke of Youngstown; three grandchildren, Joshua Grant and Jacob Grant, both of Wadsworth and Ms. Jessica Grant of New Philadelphia as well as a host of relatives and friends. She will also be missed by her pet schnoodle, Jazz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Darryl Lyn Grant; two brothers, Howard “Pete” Ivy and Louis Ivy and one sister, Mrs. Florence Parker.
Faith, courage, grace and dignity define her final years as she faced declining health. The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at North Lima Fresenius Dialysis Center for their care. Also, heartfelt thanks are extended to the Rev. Robert Felder for his kindness and faithfulness.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, August 6 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Youngstown Funeral Chapel.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Oakwood Cemetery (Warren).
