WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – A string of summer violence continued in Warren as police found a young mother dead near the Fairview Gardens apartment complex late Saturday night.
Police have identified the victim as 21-year-old Heaven Lynn Townsend, of Youngstown. She was described by her friends as someone who was always willing to help others.
“It’s normally quiet out in the Fairview Gardens and everybody knows that,” a resident said.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of the Benton Street complex.
“About 10 something, I heard about three shots and 40 more followed that, and I instantly hopped on the floor,” the resident said.
Police said Townsend was found shot to death in a parking lot off of Duke Avenue — another victim of what’s been a violent summer in the city.
“We’ve done our best to put out additional patrols to get the street crime units out doing sweeps of different areas to try and curtail it. It’s really bad right now, yes,” said Warren Law Director Greg Hicks.
Former City Safety Service Director Fred Harris, who grew up in the Fairview Gardens apartment complex, said something has to be done.
“I’ve been in Warren all my life, I’m 74 years old. I’ve never seen it like this.”
He said this weekend’s shooting makes him worry about the many children who live in the complex.
“Bullets ricochet. Those bullets don’t have a name on them. They can go anywhere and I’m just afraid some innocent young child is gonna get killed and then all hell is gonna break loose.”
Overnight, a large portion of the complex was taped off while detectives searched the area.
There are no suspects in custody at this time.
