AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Police say a 69-year-old Austintown man is facing charges in connection with a shooting at Chipper’s Sports Bar and Grille in Austintown.

Police say Richard Bates, Sr., was arrested early Sunday morning. He’s charged with felonious assault and attempted aggravated murder.

Bates was just a couple feet away from his ex-wife when he attempted to shoot the back of her head, according to police. Police said he missed, and no one was injured.

According to a police report, Bates chased the woman around the building after attempting to shoot her, later leaving the area.

The bar’s manager, who witnessed the shooting, told police that he is familiar with Bates and his ex-wife because they both frequent the business. He said he heard a loud “pop” and looked over to see Bates pointing a gun at the woman’s head, according to the report.

Police said the incident was also captured on surveillance video.

Bates was arrested at his home, where police reported finding a handgun with a shell casing jammed inside.

Police said Bates had reportedly been involved in a dispute with another man earlier that day. Police said the other man had been with Bates’ ex-wife at the time.

Bates is being held in the jail on $200,000 bond. He’s scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. October 11.
