CORTLAND, Ohio (WKBN) – The search for a missing boater at Mosquito Lake was called off Monday afternoon due to choppy water.
Crews plan to continue their search on Tuesday in what’s now being called a recovery effort.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which is leading the search, is looking for 51-year-old John Schuster who went missing Sunday morning.
Schuster was fishing with another passenger on Mosquito Lake. Police got the call around 10:30 a.m. Sunday that the canoe had capsized after it had filled with water.
The passenger was rescued by another person who was fishing at the time, but crews were unable to find Schuster.
The windy weather has made for a difficult search.
Teams called off the search around 4 p.m. Sunday but resumed Monday with better weather conditions. Just before 5 p.m. Monday, as the waves began to get choppy, they again called off the search.
So far, more than a dozen fire and rescue crews have found only a life vest.
ODNR was using boats with sonar to search the water.
“We actually brought in a few larger boats because of the weather conditions. The waves are definitely picking up out there,” said ODNR Sgt. Josh Orwick on Monday morning.
Police asked the public to contact the Bazetta police (330-675-2730) or fire departments (330-637-8816) if they see Schuster.
