HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – William M. “Bill” Shaffer of Hermitage died at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, October 18, 2017, in Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 91.
Bill was born June 30, 1926, in Harmony, Pennsylvania, a son of Ferdinand and Emma (Eiler) Shaffer.
Bill was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran during World War II serving on the USS Missouri.
He worked at Westinghouse Electric as a mechanical fitter for 29 years, retiring in 1980.
He enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling and spending time talking with people.
Bill is survived by a daughter, Cindy Kettering and her husband, Blaine of Hermitage; two sisters, Gertrude Megyesi and her husband, Edward of Sharon and Vernetta Rice of Sharpsville; a brother, Raymond Shaffer of Sharpsville; two grandchildren, Sara Weisen and Logan Kettering and two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Caisen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Almeda Mae (Boles) Shaffer, whom he married August 5, 1960 and she passed away December 21, 1985; three sisters, Catherine Bochert, Leatrice Rice and Georgia Parsons and four brothers, Richard, Frederick, Robert and Edward Shaffer.
Calling hours will be 4:00 p.m. to time of service Monday, October 23 in John Flynn Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 2630 E. State St., Hermitage.
Funeral service will begin at 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 23 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Doug Dyson officiating.
Burial will be in America’s Cemetery.
