YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A homegoing celebration in honor of Mr. George Gater, Jr. will be held Friday, November 10, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Mr. Gater departed this life Saturday, October 28, 2017, in Austintown.
Mr. Gater was born November 22, 1928, in Greensboro, Alabama, a son of George and Mamie Hill Gater, Sr.
He relocated to the Mahoning Valley in 1951 and was formerly employed with Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Wheatland Tube and LTV, retiring after 31 years of service. He formerly worked as a bus driver for the Jewish Community Center, retiring after 22 years and MyCap as a teacher’s aide.
He was a member of the church, where he served in the male chorus and the No. 2 Usher Board.
He was a mason and member of the Steel Valley Male Chorus, the Pilgrims of Harmony, the True Gospel Singers and the Swan Silvertones, performing on the Bobby Jones Gospel TV Show. He was known for singing the “Little Wooden Church”.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving daughter, Donitta “Jeannie” Gater (R.D., Jr.) Anderson; his niece, Paula Cunningham, whom he raised as a daughter; his grandchildren, Rachelle (Rodney) Anderson Tucker, Daryl Anderson, Sr., Summar (William) Anderson Slaughter, Danielle Anderson, Sierra Anderson and Daryl Holloman; his niece, Mamie Gater Steward, who was raised as his sister; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; his Goddaughter, Ryshanie Thomas Love and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Daryl Gater; his great-grandson, Khiman Anderson; three sisters, Jessie Lee Harris, Jennie Lee Gater and Mary Rosie Gater; two brothers, Henry Gater, Sr. and T.C. Gater; his former wife, Bernice Gater; his nephew, Walter Gater, who was raised as his brother and a granddaughter-in-law, Anissa Spivey-Anderson.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 10 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the church.
