KINSMAN, Ohio – Richard “Dick” D. Gates, age 80, of Kinsman, Ohio, died Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Andover, Ohio.
He was born January 23, 1937, in Warren, Ohio, a son of Gilbert E. and Alberta L. (Wilcox) Gates.
A lifelong area resident, Dick was a 1954 graduate of Kinsman High School.
He went on to serve our country in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until 1959.
He was a retired self employed truck driver who had the license to haul three trailers and hazardous material. He also belonged to the Teamsters #769.
Dick had his pilot license and loved to fly and he enjoyed his flight simulator with which he would log all of his flights in. He enjoyed building and flying large remote control model airplanes, doing crossword, jigsaw and Sudoku puzzles and was a NASCAR fan. Dick liked to be out on Pymatuning Lake in the pontoon boat and he always enjoyed eating and chatting at Nancy’s Cozy Cafe and Times Square Restaurant in Kinsman.
He is survived by his seven children, Karen Gates of Gulfport, Florida, Karla Graham of Port Richey, Florida, Jeffrey Gates of Warren, Ohio, Glen (Dana) Gates of Girard, Ohio, Gregory Gates of Warren, Ohio, Krista Kelsh of Warren, Ohio and Gary Gates (fiancée, Lisa) of San Tan Valley, Arizona; his six grandchildren, Kelly (Brandon) Quarles, Kyle Kelsh, Kayla Kelsh, Kara Kelsh, Ryan Gates and Emma Gates; one great-granddaughter, Mya Robertson and two brothers, Denny Gates and Harley Gates, both of Kinsman.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Chico Graham; sister, Gilberta Daly and brother, Galie Gates.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Baumgardner Funeral & Cremation Service, 8569 Main St., Kinsman, Ohio.
Calling hours will be Friday, November 24 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m.
