HERMITAGE, Pennsylvania – Nicholas “Nick” Dzurinda, of Hermitage, passed away unexpectedly Sunday evening, November 19, 2017 in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell. He was 63.
Nick was born September 25, 1954 in Sharon, a son of Michael and Geraldine (Dawes) Dzurinda.
He was a 1972 graduate of Hickory High School and earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Youngstown State University.
Nick owned and operated Starr Business Solutions, Hermitage and worked with many companies throughout the Shenango Valley. Years earlier, he was employed by Daffin’s Candies in Sharon and also worked part time for many years at Basilone’s in Farrell with his dear friend, Bill Basilone.
He was a member of Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex.
Nick loved playing golf and was one of the top amateurs in the Shenango Valley. He was a member of the Hornets golf team in high school and won the Herald Tam O’Shanter Junior Golf Championship in 1970. He set a course record at three local golf courses throughout his career which include, the Hickory VFW Golf Course, where he shot a 61; Oak Tree Country Club, where he carded a 65 and Tam O’Shanter Golf Course where he also shot a 65 in 1976. Nick was a three time Club Champion at the former Sharon Country Club, where he also won the prestigious Punch McDowell Golf Tournament and was a five time runner-up. Nick was a member of many golf leagues, participated in many tournaments and events and was invited to play in the U.S. Mid-Amateur Golf Championship. His greatest accomplishment and contribution was to the Penn-Ohio Golf League where he was a 35 year member and served as captain for 20 years and president for 11 years. Nick also enjoyed playing baseball in his youth and was a local Punt, Pass and Kick winner. He loved going to the beach at Hilton Head Island and was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Nick was a loving husband to Marilyn (Starr) Dzurinda for 16 years.
Besides his wife, he also leaves a sister, Stephanie Garner and her husband, Rod, Charlotte, North Carolina; a nephew, Craig Griffin and his wife, Dawn; a great-niece, Natalie Rose Griffin; his mother-in-law, Mary Starr, Pittsburgh; three brothers-in-law and their families, Thomas Starr and his wife, Angel, Warren, Ohio, Michael Starr and his wife, Tanya, Pittsburgh and Stephen Starr and his wife, Debbie, Venetia, Pennsylvania and a Goddaughter, Katie (Basilone) Erdman.
Nick was preceded in death by his father, Michael Dzurinda; his mother, Geraldine Danilov; his stepfather, Paul Danilov and his father-in-law, William Starr.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
Calling hours will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Friday, November 24 in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25 in Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, with Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, Hermitage.
