PORTLAND, Oregon (Formerly Youngstown, Ohio) – A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columba Cathedral for Dr. Anthony H. Stocks, 85, who died Thursday, January 4 at home surrounded by his family.
Anthony was born February 13, 1932, in Petaluma, California, the son of Anthony and Lyla (Browning) Stocks.
He was a graduate of Petaluma High School and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Accounting from San Jose State University in 1953. He earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University in 1956 and later received his PhD from SUNY Buffalo in 1963.
Anthony began his career as an economics professor at West Virginia University, where he worked from 1961 to 1969. He later taught economics at Youngstown State University from 1969 until his retirement in 1996. He served as chair of the Economics Department, visited universities in China as an academic consultant and served as an expert witness for local attorneys in wrongful death and accident cases.
Anthony was a member of the American Economic Association and the Association of Forensic Economists, among other professional organizations.
He enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Anthony’s wife, the former Gloria Charlotte (Kwiatkowski) Stocks, whom he married September 1, 1956, died Febrary 28, 2016.
He is survived by his son, Anthony G. (Jane Speyer) Stocks of Portland; two grandchildren, Clarissa and Charlotte Stocks; sister-in-law, Christine (Harold) Boutwell of Erie, Pennsylvania; niece, Amy Boutwell of North Carolina and two nephews, Christopher Boutwell and Brian Boutwell.
Antony was also preceded in death by his parents and son, Gregory Stocks.
Family and friends may call Saturday, January 13 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Youngstown State University Foundation, 655 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, OH 44502.
